Dave Chapelle GOES OFF On Kevin Hart After Sheryl Underwood ROASTS Him
You've done good though, Kevin. The black community is so proud of you. Right now, George Floyd is looking up at us all, laughing so hard that he can't breathe. God bless you, Kevin. God bless this room.
I have a great reputation in show business, but in comedy, I'm what's known as a lazy comedian, which is crazy because I work all the time, but that's not why they call me lazy. They call me lazy cuz I do shows sometimes 20,000 people be in the crowd and I'll tell a joke and they'll all look at me like I'm crazy, but three or four people will laugh really hard and I'll be on stage like, "Yeah, that's good enough."
Why is Dave Chappelle going to Africa? Why does Mariah Carey make a $100 million deal and take her clothes off on TRL? A weak person cannot get to sit here and talk to you. Ain't no weak people talking to you. So what is happening in Hollywood? Nobody knows.
The worst thing to call somebody is crazy. It's dismissive. I don't understand this person. So they're crazy. That's bull. These people are not crazy. They are strong people. Maybe the environment is a little sick.
Everybody has said tonight that I can't act. Kevin cannot act. What I want you to do is go back and look at that moment where I shook Cat's hand. I looked him in the eye and I said, "I just want us to be friends."
Someone made a George Floyd joke. Tony Hinchcliffe made a George Floyd joke. He's not in the room. He has nothing to do with Kevin Hart.
Her husband committed suicide three years into their marriage. I've been sitting next to her for 2 hours and I have to ask how did he last that long? Cheryl was in the Air Force but she couldn't fly and neither could her husband who jumped off.
When they talked to me about how they were coming at me, I said it better be funny. But I also told them whatever you say, it's not me that you got to deal with.
The George Floyd joke. It wasn't a tasteful joke to our culture, to our audience. But our audience that's watching the roast, if you're watching the roast, you get why they're doing it. You get why the racial humor is on the table. I wasn't shocked.
It's Tony Hinchcliffe. Like I don't expect less. I don't expect more. I feel like you're saying going too far is the point. I don't want to put words in your mouth. Yes. I mean, you — that's why you're there.
I love the fact that you white boy comics want to say all the words that black comics get cancelled for saying. And I'm glad that y'all brought back certain words. But yes, Shane, I'm talking about you.
You know, Kevin, they told me not to mention your kids on this roast, but I must say, you did good. He lost his gig hosting the Academy Awards because of some tweets. He got into a fist fight on a private plane. Proof that no matter how much money black people have, they're still going to act up.
Unlike Bill Cosby, women don't know when Kevin is inside of them.
You've done good though, Kevin. The black community is so proud of you. Right now, George Floyd is looking up at us all, laughing so hard that he can't breathe. God bless you, Kevin. God bless this room. And God bless the United States of America. Thank you so much.
So making fun of a black man who was killed by the police on camera is insane to me. There is a limit on freedom of speech. He's not going to get arrested for that. But I think you should be held accountable.
I don't believe in cancel culture. But my point is that when people say or do things that we don't agree with, we don't have to support them. Just because speech is free legally doesn't mean I have to be okay with everything you say. And I think that if you can say whatever you want to say, I can govern myself accordingly after that. I think it is distasteful for Tony to make the joke.
It offended me because of how directly connected I am as a black man with the George Floyd incident. Just the injustice of it, just the humanity of it. You put your knee on his neck and it's human to human.
There was a comedian on there. There were a lot of racist jokes from white men. Tony Hinchcliffe is one of them. This is the second time he decided to take a low blow. My guy, in all these years, you don't have any other material? You're going to keep picking on the family of an innocent man who was killed by police? I just think it's a little crazy that it worked for you last time so now you're doing it again. One trick pony.
People are behind him saying, "Oh, well, he's a comedian. It's okay what he said." I don't think it's okay what he said. I just feel like if you said it at a Tom Brady roast, just be expecting whatever comes back. You just can't get offended coming back to a roast and then say, "Oh, he shouldn't have said that."
Is there anything at a roast that's off limits? Yes. Stuff like this. If you already got the backlash from it before, why do it again? Little Yachty had a line in his song where he talked about George Floyd and people said, "We're never listening to his music." But if you're using it as art and he's using it as expression, what's the difference if he's using it as a joke? I look at them completely different. If it's a punch line, it's a punch line. I don't know how the white man gets a pass.
What was the reason you went to Africa? Well, there were a few reasons, but if you're a black dude trying to hide, Africa is a good place. I had a good time. And another thing I loved about Africa was the people. It was so warm. I was talking to them about my problems and they listened. They don't know anything about Chappelle Show. So they just listened. I'm like, man, I had this show and felt like people were trying to control me. I was freaked out. I just had to get out of there. I walked away from $50 million. I'm scared and all. And they were like, "Hey, baby. They did all this to you, brother." I said, "That's how it be in America. That's messed up, man." They said, "But here in Africa, we have a philosophy that helps us get through things like this. You always got to remember one thing when you go through these problems, Dave." And I said, "What's that, brother?" And he said, "I ate a dog today." Just grow up.
When I see that they put every black man in the movies in a dress at some point in their career, I start connecting dots. Why do all these brothers got to wear a dress? That happened to me. I'm doing a movie with Martin. The movie's going good. So I walk into the trailer. I'm like, man, this must be the wrong trailer because there's a dress in here. The writer comes in. He's like, "Dave, listen. We got this hilarious scene where Martin's sneaking out of jail. So he disguises you as a prostitute and puts this dress on you." I said, "No, I'm not doing that. I don't feel comfortable with that. That should have been in a discussion." He said, "What? You don't feel comfortable with it? I mean, it's a hilarious bit. All the greats have done it." I said, "Well, if all the greats have done it, it's kind of hacky, right? So why don't we just not do it? Because I don't feel comfortable wearing a dress."
No one in Hollywood has a memory of going to a sold-out Kevin Hart show. Have we ever heard of a comedian that came to LA and in his first year had his own sitcom on network television and his own movie that he was leading? We've never heard of that before that person or since that person.
My frustration with Cat Williams comes from him always pointing at Hollywood. Hollywood this, the white man this and that. When do you take responsibility for your actions? You were set up to be the star. You didn't show up to work. You missed promo shoots. You became a risk to the studios, which is why the studios stopped working with you. He chose drugs.
Everybody has said tonight that I can't act. Kevin cannot act. What I want you to do is go back and look at that moment where I shook Cat's hand. I looked him in the eye and I said, "I just want us to be friends." Some of the best acting I've ever done in my career. I did not mean one word of what I said.
Cat Williams. Hello, Kevin. Hello, Cat. I'm surprised they invited me. That's how little star power you have. They had to start inviting your enemies. I said, "I hate him." They said, "Come anyway."
The George Floyd joke. It wasn't a tasteful joke to our culture, to our audience, but if you're watching the roast, you get why they're doing it. You get why the racial humor is on the table. I wasn't shocked. That's what they do. Go look at the Tom Brady one. It happens every year when they do a roast. It's not new. It's not a new approach to comedy.
Do you feel like Tony Hinchcliffe went too far when he made that joke about George Floyd? It's Tony Hinchcliffe. Like I don't expect less. I don't expect more.
Did you see the interview I did with Terence Floyd, George Floyd's brother? He said as a fan of you and knowing that you came to the funeral to support his family, even though it's a roast and Tony, that's what he does, they expected you to be the person that would stop it right in the moment or just not allow for certain things. What do you expect me to do? You want me to take a live production and stand up and fight Tony or have a reaction? Tony told a joke. It's a live production. I'm not compromising the live production for a reaction. What do you want me to do? I'm going to drag him off? You want me to fight afterwards? You want me to turn it into what? That's not what I agreed to do.
He said, "I guess 50 million is not enough." And I would look at him like, who are you talking to? 50 million not enough? Take the zero. You can take three more zeros off. I'm good with it. And I didn't know what was troubling about that. But for somebody that's still coming up, not used to having big money or anything, I was like, I don't even understand how anybody can say 50 million is not enough.
I remember we were in the green room one day. It was me, Dave, and Mos Def. And Dave was — I think Mos Def was a real estate agent in Africa because he was trying to get everybody to come to Africa. I wanted to say, "Yo, you can't get all of Brooklyn to come to Africa because then Africa becomes Brooklyn." But I just had this weird feeling that he probably went there. And then maybe two or three days later they announced that he was in Africa. But I never thought he wasn't going to come back. But he never came back and he never communicated anything to me.
Do you believe there was a number that he would have been willing to come back for, or was he just over being underpaid for such a long time? I don't know. That's a tough question that only Dave could answer. But I know he loves money, but he's not driven by money. I think it was probably something morally he didn't agree with. I don't think his decision to walk away was just about the money. But when he came back, it was like, "No, give me my money."
Her husband committed suicide three years into their marriage. I've been sitting next to her for two hours and I have to ask how did he last that long? Cheryl was in the Air Force but she couldn't fly and neither could her husband who jumped off.
When they talked to me about how they were coming at me, I said it better be funny. But I also told them, "Whatever you say, it's not me that you got to deal with."
You think you hurt my feelings by talking about my husband? My husband only once. You every night with them whack ass jokes you be telling. Shane, you may talk about me, but I know you want to hit this black harder than you hit the windows of the Capitol on January 6.
